BIO

Canadian-American contralto Sydney Frodsham brings joy, musicality, and compassion everywhere she goes.

She is passionate about exploring and understanding emotions through the universal language of music. She has performed a variety of repertoires, always connecting to roles through the lens of raw emotions and poetic sensitivity. This upcoming season, she joins Les Arts Florissant's Le Jardin de Voix in their performances of Les arts florissans and La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers (singing L'Architecture and Aréteuze, respectively).

Her season also includes performing Madame de la Haltière (Cendrillon) with Opéra du Royaume and Erda (Siegfried) with Edmonton Opera. Past performances include Erda in Das Rheingold, Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, La Maman/La Tasse/Le Pâtre/La Libellule in L’enfant et les sortilèges, Dritte Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Irene in Theodora, and Bradamante in Alcina.

Sydney roots herself in the community wherever she goes. Her extroverted nature allows her to build relationships quickly and authentically, finding people and places to love all over the world. Recent influential mentors include Ariane Girard, Darrell Babidge, and Virginia Dupuy. As well as performing with Orchestre Métropolitain and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, this young contralto has also completed apprenticeships with l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, Des Moines Metro Opera, and The Santa Fe Opera.

Her passion for the power of words and lyrics drives her desire to perform and create. She feels compelled to use music as a vehicle for connection, which fuels not only her love for traditional opera but for contemporary works as well. She has been a part of the creation of multiple new works, from opera to song cycles, such as the role of La Mère in Le flambeau de la nuit (Ballet Opéra Pantomime), La razon del viaje and Tibet Fantasia (Voices of Change), and He Shall Prepare a Way (BYU).

Sydney earned her Master of Music degree from Brigham Young University and her Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Methodist University.
